# Performance: monthly and yearly returns at a glance Returns month by month and year by year, as a bar chart over a table: for your account, an investor or a Smart Portfolio as etoro publishes them, or for an instrument. A bar chart draws the twelve months of one year, and a table under it lists the years, newest first, with a cell for each month and the year's figure at the end. It shows whatever its link group is on. For an investor, a Smart Portfolio or your own account, the figures are the returns etoro publishes for them. For an instrument, they are the monthly change in its closing price. Unlinked, or in a group with nothing chosen, it shows your own account. Reach for it to see which months made a year and which held it back, for your own account or for whatever you are looking at in the rest of your layout. ## How to use it 1. Click the + button at the bottom of the sidebar and choose **Add widget**. 2. Type Performance in **Search for widget**, or open **Portfolio**, and click the **Performance** card. It joins the open layout. When the card says **Not enough space**, the layout is full: choose **Add layout** under the same +, then **Blank**, and add the widget there. 3. While Performance is in a link group, click its title to search for an instrument, an investor or a Smart Portfolio, and pick one: the whole group moves to it. A watchlist row clicked in the same group moves it too. **Unlink**, in the same search, takes it out of the group and back to your own account. Unlinked, its title is not a search: click the chain button beside it and choose a group first. 4. The bars show the chosen year's months, up for a gain and down for a loss. At the top right is that year's figure: **Total** for a year that has ended, **YTD** for the one still running. Point at a bar to see that month's figure there instead. 5. In the table, green cells are months up and red ones months down, and a stronger tint marks a bigger move. A dash is a month with no figure. Click a year's row to move the chart to that year. ## Good to know - Your own returns are there only on a real account. On your Virtual portfolio, Performance says so when it shows your account, and works as usual for an instrument, an investor or a Smart Portfolio. - For an investor, a Smart Portfolio or your account, a month is the change in equity from its start to its end, leaving deposits and withdrawals out, and a year compounds its months, so it is not the sum of its cells. etoro updates these figures once a day, at 00:00 GMT. The **i** at the top right, or **About these statistics** in a narrow tile's ⋮ menu, says so and links to etoro's help article on them. - etoro publishes no returns for an instrument, so Edge works them out from its closing prices: each month is the change from the previous month's last close, the newest month runs to the latest close, and the year compounds the months. The table goes back about four years at most, so its oldest year may show only its last months. - A Smart Portfolio's months from before it launched can be back-tested. Their figures carry an asterisk, which the note under the table explains. - In a small tile, Performance shows the year's figure and its latest month, and the widget's ⋮ menu lists the years to choose from. - The Create Layout page has a ready-made **Performance** layout, which puts Performance on your own account beside your account's value, your holdings and your trading history. There it starts unlinked. Screens are from a Demo account.
